Thanks to the good efforts of Tim McCoy, the Meteoritical Society now has its own asteroid! The Working Group on Small Bodies Nomenclature of the IAU has designated (15708) Metsoc as the name of the asteroid whose discovery designation was 1988 RB12, found by S. J. Bus on September 14, 1988 at Cerro Tololo, Chile. The citation reads: "Since its establishment in 1933, the Meteoritical Society has united meteorite scientists from around the world. In addition to hosting an annual conference, the Society publishes the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science and works to promote meteorite science in regions previously underrepresented in the community, including South America and Africa."
