Dear Meteoritical Society Members,

Here are some news items and announcements:

  • Data Management Bootcamp for Astromaterials Researchers Workshop on August 9 – A pre-conference curation workshop will be held Sunday August 9. Visit the website for more details.

  • Student and Postdoctoral Lunch on Sunday, August 9 – With support from the Schwiete Foundation the Membership Committee is leading a lunch meeting for students and postdocs to socialize. The lunch will also feature senior scientists, leaders of successful planetary missions, who will join the group to engage informally and share their experiences and insights. Lunch will be free, and please indicate your interest when registering for the annual meeting.

  • Mentor/Mentee program during MetSoc 2026 - The mentor/mentee program pairs students and early career PhDs new to the community with an experienced mentor to discuss research and become more integrated into the Meteoritical Society community. You can enroll in the Mentor/Mentee Program only until the early-bird registration deadline (July 3rd ). Applications received after this date will not be considered. Please indicate your interest while registering for the annual meeting.

  • Endowment Grant Deadline - June 15 – Endowment Fund Grants can be used to support activities that further the goals of the society or to support student and early-career research efforts. Visit the Endowment Fund Grants webpage for details on how to apply.

  • 2026 Pellas-Ryder Award – Congratulations to Lucia Bellino, a graduate student at Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin, who is the recipient of this award that honors outstanding first author planetary science papers by students. Read the full announcement here.

  • Meteoritical Society Fellows of 2026 – Congratulations to 12 new Fellows announced here!

  • New Early Career Seminar Series initiative from the Meteoritical Society – The Membership Committee of the Meteoritical Society is beginning a new initiative to engage with Early Career (EC) members of the community. The Early Career Seminar Series will be a regularly occurring virtual series that will be centered around topics relevant to the EC community (such as but not limited to: proposal writing, requesting astromaterials, public outreach, etc.). Recordings will be posted to the Society's YouTube channel and to the Meteoritical Society website. While the Series is targeted towards EC members of the community, all are welcome to attend. The linked Google Form may be used to submit suggestions for future topics as well as volunteer to help present on any future topic.


COMMUNITY SUBMITTED ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • **Seminar on Applying for Meteoritical Society Research Grants and Community Grants – The first seminar from the Early Career Seminar Series will be held on Thursday, May 28th at 20:00 UTC. The Research and Community Grants are supported by the Meteoritical Society Endowment Fund. The Research Grants are aimed at supporting research activities by student and early-career Meteoritical Society members. The Community Grants are aimed at furthering the goals of the Meteoritical Society through activities and projects proposed by Meteoritical Society members. During this seminar, attendees will hear from members of the Endowment Committee about the application and evaluation processes of these Grants as well as from previous Grant awardees. The goal of this Seminar is to provide valuable information about these Grants ahead of the upcoming June 15th deadline. More information on these Grants and applying for them may be found on the Endowment Fund page of the Metsoc website. A link will be sent by email to members closer to the time of the talk.
