COMMUNITY SUBMITTED ANNOUNCEMENTS

We wanted to draw your attention to the following topical session (T167) for the GSA Annual Meeting in San Antonio, October 19-22 (https://connects.geosociety.org). Abstract deadline is August 5, 2025.

Impact Cratering Process in the Solar System: In Memory of Dr. Bevan M. French (T167).

The session is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Bevan French, an outstanding expert on shock metamorphism who conducted much of the pioneering work on the topic, who recently passed away; he was very much involved in MetSoc matters and the recipient of the 2002 Barringer Medal.

The session focuses on the nature of impact craters and their influence on planetary geologic evolution. We solicit contributions on aspects of impact crater formation, ejecta, shock processes, geochemical and mineralogical signatures, modeling, and geologic implications; comparison among planetary bodies. Terrestrial craters provide ground-truth for analysis of planetary examples.Spacecraft have provided a range of new data on the solid surfaces in the Solar System allowing broad insight into the impact cratering processes and the influence of impacts on the geology of those bodies. This session provides an opportunity to share information and insight.

The 5th Arab and Africa Impact Cratering and Astrogeology Conference (AICAC V) in Accra,Ghana, and excursion to the Bosumtwi impact crater - November 9-15, 2025

The Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana in partnership with the African Initiative for Planetary and Space Science (AFIPS) is organizing the 5th Edition of the Arab and Africa Impact Cratering and Astrogeology Conference (AICAC V) in Accra, Ghana.

This conference aims to create awareness and interest in Planetary and Space Science and bring stakeholders together. It will contribute to capacity building through a dedicated training workshop on the identification of impactites and meteorites. It will highlight the research, educational and geotourism/ecotourism potentials of the Bosumtwi impact crater (ICDP drill site in 2004), distinguished as one of the second 100 IUGS Geological Heritage sites (IUGS, 2024).

The meeting offers a Pre-Conference Workshop (Nov. 9), Main Conference (Nov. 10-11), and Bosumtwi crater excursion (Nov. 12-15). It is supported by the Meteoritical Society, the Barringer Crater Company, and others. Interested colleagues are invited to participate and to visit Bosumtwi.

Abstract deadline is September 5 - for details and deadlines, see: https://aicacv.org/.
